Instructor: Thomas A. Cassilly, Ph.D. Dr. Cassilly is a graduate of Princeton University, the Institute of Political Studies at the University of Paris, and Columbia University where he received his doctorate. He retired from the United States Foreign Service in 1972 after a career spanning almost a quarter century. He served in the French West Indies, South Korea, Iran, Congo, the Central African Republic, Guinea, and in the office of the Secretary of State and the United Nations. From 1942 to 1945 he served in the army (European Theater) receiving the Bronze Star and the French Croix de Guerre. His other awards include the Superior Service Award from the Department of State and the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres from the French Government. Since 1978 he has taught at Montclair State University, New Jersey; Manhattanville College, Purchase, NY; and Fordham University, New York City.
Subjects will include: Geography and economics of the region; Religion: Christianity, Judaism, and Islam; Palestine and Israel (2 classes); Egypt and Jordan; Syria and Lebanon; Turkey; Iran, including the Iran-Iraq War; Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States; Kuwait and the first Gulf War; Wars in Afghanistan and Iraq; Iraq and prospects for democracy in the region; Overview of the Middle East.
