The General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen offers internships for graduate and undergraduate students each fall, spring, and summer. In the fall and spring, interns can work part-time with a flexible schedule of 8-10 hours per week during the semester. In the summer, the internship can be full-time or part time Monday through Friday 9 AM to 5 PM. Interns work on a volunteer basis but may be compensated by grants and special donations.

Internships are available in the following areas: Library, General Society Museum & Archives, Landmarks, Literature and Labor Lecture Series, and Mechanics' Institute

To apply for an internship, please submit the following:

  • A cover letter that indicates the specific department(s) with which you would like to be placed
  • A resume
  • A five page academic writing sample
  • Two recommendations (at least one from a professor)
  • Some applicants may be required to provide a portfolio or other information, but they will be notified of this when they are called for an interview

All applications must be submitted electronically only. Please email completed application package to info@generalsociety.org with your name in the subject line. The cover letter, resume, and writing sample should be submitted together in one email. Recommendations must be emailed directly from the recommender to info@generalsociety.org and should have “Recommendation for Applicant’s Name” as the subject.
