ARTISAN LECTURE SERIES SPRING 2012

AT THE GENERAL SOCIETY LIBRARY

Tuesday, February 7, 2012

JEAN-PAUL VIOLLET, Fine Cabinetry Artisan

LECTURE STARTS AT 6:00 P.M.

RECEPTION TO FOLLOW

Jean-Paul Viollet will talk about his work in fine cabinetry. Mr. Viollet grew up in the French Alps where, since 1835, seven generations of his family have worked with wood. After trying other pursuits, he returned to the family business, drawn by the allure of wood and the work of master Art Deco designers. In an issue of Departures Magazine, he said, “I like to give importance to the beauty of the natural wood in my designs, but also use a large collection of veneers and exotic woods, as well as shell, parchment, straw, horn and shagreen (stingray skin), in the work.” His designs range from small tables to entire walls. These beautiful works are all produced at Atelier Viollet in Brooklyn, where proud artisans, who revere the ancient art of cabinetry, work every day to keep a lively eye on new lines, new subtleties, and new elegance of shape. For photos of his work, see www.atelierviollet.com.
